Microsoft updates Teams Workflows to support multi-step automation

Microsoft is updating its Workflows feature for Microsoft Teams to allow for more complex, multi-step automation. Currently, users often have to create separate workflows for different parts of a process, but the upcoming update will enable multiple sequential actions within a single automated workflow. This change is expected to roll out globally in September 2026, with general availability beginning in early September.

Workflows serves as an automation layer for Microsoft 365, utilizing Power Automate to link various apps and services. The system can be triggered by events, schedules, or specific data within Microsoft 365, such as messages, uploads, or form responses. This allows for the automation of repetitive tasks like approvals, notifications, and task creation across platforms including Outlook, SharePoint, and Planner.

To lower the technical barrier for non-developers, Microsoft is integrating Copilot, an AI-driven interface that allows users to generate workflows using natural language. This conversational approach enables users to describe desired actions in plain sentences rather than manually building every trigger and action. The update aims to improve productivity by reducing manual steps and errors through a low-code or natural-language-first experience.
