Microsoft moves Windows 11 26H2 to Release Preview

Microsoft has moved Windows 11 version 26H2 into the Release Preview Channel, marking the final testing phase before its general release expected in late 2026. The update focuses on stability, user interface refinements, and extended support lifecycles.

A major feature of this update is the return of taskbar repositioning, allowing users to move the bar to the top, left, or right of the screen. Other UI improvements include a resizable Start menu, enhanced search capabilities with the ability to filter web results, and a more streamlined File Explorer.

For users already running versions 24H2 or 25H2, the transition to 26H2 is highly efficient. It is delivered via a small enablement package (eKB) of approximately 174 KB, which activates dormant features and requires only a single reboot. In contrast, users on older versions like 23H2 will require a full download of approximately 5 GB to 6.5 GB.

Additionally, Microsoft is shifting its development focus toward native applications by utilizing the WinUI framework. This move aims to improve system performance and reduce the high memory consumption often associated with web-based components in the operating system.
