Microsoft Windows keyboard shortcuts: history and new tools
Bill Gates previously revealed that the iconic Windows keyboard shortcut, Ctrl + Alt + Del, was originally the result of an error. During a talk at Harvard, Gates explained that Microsoft intended for a single key to trigger the secure login function to prevent malicious software interference. However, due to opposition from IBM keyboard designers, the company had to adopt the three-key combination instead.
To assist users with managing various commands, Microsoft has released a tool within the PowerToys suite for Windows 10 and 11. The PowerToys Shortcut Guide acts as a searchable directory that displays available keyboard combinations for the application currently in focus. Users can access this guide using the Win + Shift + Ç command, which opens a sidebar listing shortcuts to improve productivity.
