Microsoft Windows Update Triggers Recycle Bin Filename Glitch

Microsoft confirmed that the June 2026 Patch Tuesday updates (KB5094126) introduced a bug in the Recycle Bin across all supported Windows client and server versions. When a user attempts to permanently delete a single item, the confirmation dialog shows the internal Recycle Bin filename (e.g., $Rxxxxx.ext) instead of the original, readable name. The Bin’s list view and the restore function continue to display and use the correct filename.

The issue affects Windows 11 (versions 26H1, 25H2, 24H2, 23H2), Windows 10 (22H2, Enterprise LTSC 2021, 2019, LTSB 2016) and Windows Server (2025, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2, 2012). Microsoft says engineers are developing a permanent fix that will be delivered in a future update, though it is unclear whether it will arrive via the next Patch Tuesday or an out‑of‑band release. A temporary workaround is available to business customers through Microsoft Business Support.
