Microsoft Xbox Faces Studio Closure Rumors and Strategy Criticism

At the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase Microsoft spotlighted Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II as a flagship first‑party title, reinforcing its exclusive‑content narrative even as the company pivots toward a broader multi‑platform publishing model.

Concurrently, several media reports indicated that Microsoft is evaluating the closure or spin‑off of multiple Xbox Game Studios, most notably Compulsion Games, Double Fine and Ninja Theory. Employees from these studios have posted about seeking new work, and other studios such as Arkane have been mentioned as potentially at risk.

Former PlayStation chief Shawn Layden publicly attacked the Xbox approach, writing that the moves “show a basic misunderstanding of how the interactive entertainment world moves” and likening the rapid strategic shifts to “Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly.”

The situation follows recent internal turbulence, including the departure of Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan and a mid‑June internal memo warning of further layoffs, heightening concerns about the future stability of the Xbox brand and its developer ecosystem.
