Microsoft’s Driverless Printing Shift Redefines Enterprise Print Infrastructure

Microsoft will phase out third‑party printer drivers for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025, limiting future updates to security fixes only. Starting January 2026, new drivers will be supplied only through a restricted Windows Update channel; from July 2026 the Windows IPP Inbox Class driver will become the preferred default, and by July 2027 third‑party driver updates will be limited to security‑related patches. The company is promoting open IPP standards and a driverless printing model that reduces reliance on traditional print servers.

The OptimiDoc Cloud platform bundles driverless printing with scanning, AI, OCR and workflow routing, allowing enterprises to replace separate printing and scanning solutions and to feed documents directly into Microsoft 365, DMS or ERP systems. The change forces IT departments to adopt cloud‑based printer management and to redesign document‑flow processes for the first mile of digitalisation.
