Strategy Inc. faces potential MSCI index exclusion

Strategy Inc. is facing potential exclusion from MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes following a proposed rule change targeting non-operating companies with large treasury asset holdings. MSCI is evaluating a two-step test to distinguish traditional operating businesses from entities that primarily create value by holding financial assets. If implemented, the change could force passive investment funds to sell Strategy shares, creating significant selling pressure.

Strategy executives, including Michael Saylor and Phong Le, have rejected the non-operating classification, arguing that digital assets are legitimate corporate assets and that index providers should measure markets rather than dictate asset ownership. The company stated that “neither the company nor Bitcoin requires MSCI to survive.”

In recent financial activity, Strategy raised approximately $334 million by selling MSTR common stock through an at-the-market program. These proceeds were used to fund STRC preferred stock dividends, repurchase STRC shares, and increase the company's USD reserve, which has reached $4.8 billion. During the period of August 10 to August 16, the company reported no Bitcoin purchases or sales, maintaining its holdings at 840,447 BTC.
