MicroStrategy market cap rises $7 billion amid Bitcoin rally
MicroStrategy shares rose approximately 12% following a surge in Bitcoin's price, contributing to a $7 billion increase in the company's market capitalization over a two-day period. This upward movement was further fueled by a short squeeze, as bearish investors who had bet against the stock faced rapid price increases.
Despite the market gains, Executive Chairman Michael Saylor cautioned that the company must prepare for ‘difficult years’ ahead. While MicroStrategy maintains a strategy of accumulating Bitcoin as a treasury asset, Saylor noted that this approach involves significant volatility. The company has historically used debt and equity issuances to fund its Bitcoin acquisitions, effectively acting as a leveraged proxy for the cryptocurrency.
Earlier in the year, MicroStrategy was one of the most shorted large-cap stocks, with short interest reaching approximately 9% of its float by late July. While the company recently sold a small amount of Bitcoin to cover dividend obligations, Saylor has reinforced the firm's commitment to holding its massive digital asset reserves.
