MicroStrategy trading volume exceeds Dell as investment debate grows
MicroStrategy (MSTR) has seen a surge in market interest, with its daily trading volume recently surpassing that of Dell Technologies. This spike reflects the growing perception of the company as a primary vehicle for Bitcoin exposure among public market investors.
However, BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has suggested that Bitcoin spot ETFs, such as BlackRock’s IBIT, may now be a more rational investment choice than MicroStrategy stock. Hayes argues that MicroStrategy has lost much of its previous influence and that there is no longer a clear justification for its stock to trade at a significant premium over its net asset value (mNAV).
While MicroStrategy uses debt and equity issuance to accumulate Bitcoin, its performance is tied to complex factors including capital allocation decisions, debt structures, and share dilution. In contrast, spot ETFs aim to track the price of Bitcoin more directly without exposure to corporate management risks or specific financial leverage. As the mNAV approaches 1x, the efficiency of MicroStrategy’s model of raising capital to buy more Bitcoin may face challenges.
