Microwave oven energy consumption and efficiency

Microwave ovens are generally efficient kitchen appliances, with average annual electricity consumption estimated by ADEME at approximately 40 kWh, costing around €8 per year under regulated tariffs. Actual usage typically ranges between 15 and 60 kWh annually depending on frequency and model type.

Energy consumption varies significantly by device specifications. A standard 800 W model uses about 39 kWh per year, whereas a 1,000 W grill model uses 49 kWh, and a 1,200 W combination model uses 58 kWh. Compared to traditional electric ovens, microwaves are significantly more efficient for small tasks; for example, reheating a dish for three minutes consumes roughly 0.06 kWh, while an electric oven can use five to eight times that amount for the same task.
