Microwave Users Advised to Stop Five Common Unsafe Habits

Several everyday practices for using microwave ovens can lead to uneven heating, reduced appliance lifespan, burns, or even fire hazards. According to the Times of India, placing any container without checking its material—especially metal, foil, or unsuitable plastics—can cause sparking, melting, or the release of harmful chemicals into food. Safe alternatives include microwave‑approved glass, ceramic or certified plastics.

Heating food without covering it allows steam and liquids to splash inside the cavity, creating messes and promoting uneven temperature distribution. Using vented lids, microwave‑safe covers, or suitable paper towels helps retain moisture while allowing steam to escape, preventing dry or undercooked portions. Stirring or rotating food midway through heating also promotes uniform heating and reduces hot spots.

Avoiding these five habits—unsuitable containers, heating uncovered, neglecting to stir, and others—helps keep microwave ovens functioning longer and minimizes safety risks for users.
