Mid-Missouri sports programs implement heat safety protocols

Extreme heat across Mid-Missouri and the Kansas City metro area is forcing schools and colleges to adjust or cancel outdoor sporting activities. The push for stricter heat safety protocols follows the death of MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old football player at William Jewell College, who suffered a medical emergency on the sidelines during a game.

Athletic programs are increasingly utilizing the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) tool to monitor heat stress. At Columbia College, specific thresholds dictate activity levels: readings above 87 degrees require shortened practices with mandatory water breaks, while temperatures exceeding 92 degrees result in total cancellation. Similarly, Battle High School has implemented protocols to manage extreme heat.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) recommends that all outdoor activities cease when the WBGT index reaches 89.8 degrees. Local schools continue to monitor heat advisories to determine whether to delay, reschedule, or cancel practices to protect student-athletes from heat-related illnesses.
