Middle East diplomacy and Iran tensions discussed at US universities
Academic institutions are hosting discussions regarding Middle Eastern geopolitics and the ongoing tensions involving Iran. At the University of Utah, the Gulf States Forum brought together scholars, faculty, and students to examine diplomatic efforts and regional developments. During the event, Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), was honored as the International Alumni of the Year. Albudaiwi, a former diplomat with experience in various global capitals, emphasized the need for the international community to pursue de-escalation to ensure regional peace and security.
Separately, Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service has organized an ‘Iran Lecture Series’ to address the global impacts of the conflict, including disruptions to energy markets and economic costs. However, the series has faced scrutiny regarding the diversity of its perspectives. Critics have noted that the invited speakers maintain connections to the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), an organization that advocates for diplomacy and opposes military intervention, leading to calls for a broader range of policy viewpoints within the academic programming.
