Middle East emerges as critical global trade interconnector

The Middle East is evolving into a critical trade interconnector, driven by the growth of South-South trade, which reached US$6.8 trillion in 2025. According to a DP World whitepaper, the region—particularly the Gulf—is positioning itself as a high-capacity link between Asia, Africa, and Europe through integrated maritime and land networks.

To support these flows, DP World has activated alternative UAE gateways at Khorfakkan and Fujairah while utilizing Jebel Ali as a primary customs hub. This infrastructure is bolstered by expanded regional trucking fleets, inland bonded transport, and enhanced rail links. The shift emphasizes “Connected Trade Corridors” that combine deep-sea shipping, feeder networks, and digital intelligence.

In the airfreight sector, dnata is focusing on network coordination rather than relying solely on geographic advantage. The company is prioritizing the synchronization of systems, standards, and operational behaviors across its stations to ensure seamless cargo continuity across Asia–Europe–Africa corridors. This approach addresses increasing demands for e-commerce, real-time data, and automation in global supply chains.
