Middle East security landscape shifts three years after October 7 attacks

Three years after the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, the regional landscape remains deeply transformed. The initial assault, involving the firing of approximately 5,000 rockets and the infiltration of 6,000 Al-Qassam Brigades members into Israel, resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 251 hostages. The attack also saw the capture of 12 major IDF bases.

In the aftermath, the Gaza Strip has faced massive destruction, with reports indicating 74,000 Palestinians killed, the destruction of over 371,000 housing units, and the loss of half of the territory's hospitals. While Hamas achieved an unprecedented military breach, the group now faces political isolation and the weakening of its allies within the ‘axis of resistance.’

Simultaneously, Israel faces intense scrutiny regarding its security vulnerabilities and the strategic consequences of multi-front warfare involving Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced calls for investigations into the intelligence failures preceding October 7, amid accusations that prolonged military escalation serves to maintain his political coalition and US support.
