Middle East tensions impact Rally Dakar and Formula 1 schedules
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are impacting major international sporting events. The Rally Dakar 2027, originally scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 1 to 15, is reportedly being moved to Morocco. The ASO, the rally's governing organization, has informed participating teams that the event will now begin with technical verifications and a prologue in Europe between January 6 and 9, with Spain or Portugal being considered as potential locations.
The 2027 edition in Morocco is expected to cover approximately 4,900 kilometers across 12 stages. An official announcement regarding the relocation from Saudi Arabia is expected in the coming days.
Simultaneously, uncertainty is growing within the Formula 1 paddock regarding the final two Grands Prix of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. While the races remain on the calendar, personnel have expressed concerns that an escalation in regional conflict could disrupt air travel, potentially leaving teams and staff stranded in the Middle East. There are also ongoing questions regarding the complexity of decision-making processes should a cancellation become necessary due to deteriorating security conditions.
