Middle East tensions rise ahead of UN General Assembly

As world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), regional tensions in the Middle East are escalating. A significant development involves the Iranian-backed Houthi movement in Yemen, which has recently seized strategic territories, including an island in the Red Sea and coastal areas overlooking the Bab al-Mandab strait. This movement poses a threat to global trade and energy transport routes.

Conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has intensified, with recent accusations involving strikes near holy sites and claims of downed aircraft. Meanwhile, the UNGA faces a heavy agenda, with approximately 130 heads of state expected to attend to discuss global conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and the Middle East, alongside issues of climate change, economic instability, and the modernization of the UN Security Council.
