Middlesbrough and Inverness-Highland submit UK City of Culture 2029 bids

Middlesbrough and Inverness-Highland have submitted their respective bids to be named the UK City of Culture for 2029. Both locations are among nine longlisted towns and cities competing for the prestigious title.

Middlesbrough’s bid emphasizes its growing digital sector and community spirit, with supporters noting the potential for job creation and economic growth. The town, which is already set to host the Turner Prize, aims to use the title to showcase its creativity and diverse population. The winner of the title will receive a £10m cash prize to fund a year of cultural activities.

Inverness-Highland has submitted its ‘Beò! 2029’ bid, marking the first time a Scottish entry has represented both a city and a wider region. The proposal focuses on the Highlands' unique blend of ancient and modern culture, aiming to use cultural investment to combat challenges such as depopulation and to strengthen community wellbeing. A shortlist of up to four locations is expected to be announced in October 2026.
