Middlesbrough Nightclub Licence Suspended After Under‑16 Rape Allegation

Middlesbrough Council’s licensing sub‑committee has suspended the premises licence of Lounge Afrique, a nightclub on Corporation Road, following an alleged rape of a girl under 16. Cleveland Police said the victim was served alcohol after entering the club and was later assaulted, and highlighted “significant safeguarding concerns” and difficulties obtaining information from staff.

The council cited a history of ten reported incidents over the past two years, including physical and sexual assaults and drink‑spiking, and deemed the suspension “proportionate to prevent further serious crime”. Licence holder Percy Quarcoo appealed the decision, but the sub‑committee upheld the suspension pending a full licensing hearing scheduled for 17 August. In response, the licence holder has appointed a new security team, introduced electronic ID scanners, and replaced the designated premises supervisor.

Police representative Harriet Eglinton noted CCTV evidence of concerning actions at the venue, reinforcing the decision to suspend the licence.
