Sebastian Berhalter to join Middlesbrough from Vancouver Whitecaps for $2 million

U.S. men’s national team midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, 25, is in the final stages of a transfer from the Vancouver Whitecaps to English Championship side Middlesbrough. The English club is expected to pay roughly $2 million to acquire the player before his contract expires at the end of the MLS season.

Berhalter, the son of former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, featured in all five matches for the United States at the 2026 World Cup, scoring a goal and providing an assist against Turkey. In the 2025‑26 MLS season he was Vancouver’s second‑leading scorer with six goals and seven assists, earning All‑Star honors.

Around six to ten clubs reportedly pursued the midfielder this summer, but Middlesbrough secured the deal, joining fellow American Aidan Morris at the club. The move marks Berhalter’s first step into European football after a rapid rise from a $50,000 allocation‑money trade in 2022.
