Middleton house fire inquest rules death of mother accidental
An inquest at Rochdale Coroners' Court has ruled the death of 37-year-old Kate Mulcahy an accident following a fatal house fire in Middleton, Manchester, in November 2024.
According to court testimony, the fire broke out in the attic of the family home while Mrs. Mulcahy was sleeping. Her husband, John Mulcahy, alerted by a smoke alarm, successfully evacuated their four children before attempting to reach his wife. In a desperate rescue attempt, Mr. Mulcahy climbed a drainpipe to the roof, where he smashed a skylight and removed roof tiles, but was forced to retreat by the intensity of the flames.
Neighbors assisted in the aftermath, with one witness describing a “wall of fire” that prevented entry into the property. Forensic investigators noted that open doors may have created a “chimney effect,” feeding the blaze. While the fire originated in the attic, the exact cause remains undetermined as the room was consumed by the fire. A post-mortem examination concluded that Mrs. Mulcahy died from severe burns and smoke inhalation, with no evidence of criminal involvement or underlying disease.
