Midea PortaSplit air conditioner faces EU ban and limited availability

The European Union’s new F‑gas regulation (2024/573) restricts refrigerants in new devices to a global warming potential (GWP) below 150. The Midea PortaSplit uses R32 refrigerant with a GWP of 675, exceeding the limit. As a result, the sale of new PortaSplit units could be prohibited from 1 January 2027 or, if classified differently, from 1 January 2029. Existing units are protected and may continue to be used and serviced.

Demand for the portable split‑type air conditioner has surged, with the manufacturer reporting roughly 300,000 units sold in Europe. The model’s A++ efficiency, relatively low price of €1,199 and ease of installation have made it popular, especially during recent heatwaves. This popularity has led to frequent stockouts, and the company says it is working to improve supply and arrange future deliveries.
