Midlife Women Face Perimenopause Confusion and Rising Polypharmacy

A survey of more than 7,600 U.S. women by Flo Health found that 34% of respondents were unsure whether they were in perimenopause, with uncertainty reaching 42% among ages 40 to 44. The lack of a definitive lab test and symptom overlap with conditions such as premenstrual syndrome, thyroid disease, and mental‑health issues leaves many women unable to identify the transition.

At the same time, midlife women are increasingly targeted by a booming longevity market that promotes numerous medications, supplements, and treatments. Independent pharmacist Richa Puri notes that this has driven a rise in polypharmacy—simultaneous use of multiple agents—often without professional oversight. Marketing frequently co‑opts scientific concepts like the “hallmarks of ageing” to sell product bundles and IV therapies, despite limited evidence of safety or efficacy. The combined effect is heightened health‑care complexity and potential drug‑interaction risks for a large segment of the female population.
