Texas Governor Greg Abbott receives $5 million donation from Elon Musk

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has received a $5 million donation from Elon Musk as part of his reelection campaign ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. This contribution is part of a larger $26 million influx Abbott secured during a 30-day reporting period ending October 24. Musk, who has significant business interests in Texas including Tesla and X, has become a major donor in the midterms, spending over $445 million on Republican groups and super PACs since July.

Abbott faces Democratic State Representative Gina Hinojosa in a highly competitive race. Hinojosa raised $17.5 million during the same period, supported by unions and Democratic Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. While Hinojosa has attempted to link Abbott to the tech industry and Musk, Abbott has focused his campaign on issues such as state income taxes and his opponent's endorsements.

In the prediction markets, an institutional trader placed a nearly $500,000 wager on Abbott's victory. Data from the Kalshi platform indicated the trade occurred at odds suggesting a roughly 70% chance of Abbott winning a fourth term.
