Midway Atoll airport repairs face $100 million funding decision

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is considering whether to fund over $100 million in essential repairs for Henderson Field on Midway Atoll. While the remote Pacific island does not host commercial air service, the airport serves as a critical emergency landing site for thousands of flights crossing the Pacific each year.

The airport's infrastructure is described as “deteriorating,” with necessary repairs including milling, repaving, and seawall work. If the facility becomes unavailable, airlines may be forced to use longer, more expensive flight routes or cancel certain destinations to comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, specifically the Extended-Range Twin-Engine Operations Performance Standards (ETOPS).

Although diversions to Midway are infrequent—with at least 11 commercial and military flights diverting there between 2021 and 2023—the airline lobbying group Airlines For America argues that the airport's value should not be measured by the frequency of its use alone, given its necessity for emergency engine failures over remote ocean areas.
