Midwest sees first positive net domestic migration this decade

For the first time in the current decade, the U.S. Midwest has recorded positive net domestic migration. According to Census Bureau midyear estimates as of June 2025, the region gained 16,000 residents.

This shift follows a period of significant population outflow. Between 2021 and 2024, the Midwest saw a net domestic migration loss of approximately 491,000 people. However, this trend has reversed; the annual net loss narrowed from roughly 180,000 in 2022 to about 44,000 in 2024, before reaching positive growth in 2025.

Over the four-year period from 2021 to 2025, the region’s net domestic migration increased by approximately 191,000 people. Of the 12 main states comprising the Midwest, eight reported positive net domestic migration numbers by the end of this period. This trend is particularly notable as overall U.S. population growth slowed to 0.5% between 2024 and 2025, and net international migration decreased from 2.7 million to 1.3 million.
