Midwest US heat and thunderstorm outlook for Independence Day weekend

Heat advisories across parts of the Midwest are easing as the weekend approaches, but temperatures will still reach the low 90s with heat index values near 100 °F. Forecasters expect isolated thunderstorms Saturday, with the timing of any severe weather shifted to late afternoon and evening, potentially overlapping July 4 fireworks. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph and hail up to one inch is possible.

The outlook covers southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and several Kansas counties—including Lyon, Wabaunsee, Coffey, Osage and Greenwood—as well as the Emporia area. While most locations should see mainly warm, dry conditions, short‑lived pop‑up showers or storms may occur, especially during the holiday celebrations.
