Midwest weather shifts as cold front breaks historic heat waves

A cold front is moving through the Midwest, bringing an end to intense heat waves and introducing the potential for severe weather. In Indiana, the front has provided relief following a historic early-September heat wave. Between September 1 and September 5, 2026, Indianapolis set multiple records, including the warmest night on record and a five-day streak of temperatures exceeding 95°F. Heat indices in several Indiana counties reached as high as 113°F during the peak of the heat.

As the front progresses, temperatures are expected to fluctuate. Central Indiana may see highs in the low 90s with heat indices reaching the low 100s before storms move in. In northern Missouri, storms could become marginally severe with the potential for small hail and gusty winds. Widespread rain is anticipated from Wednesday night through Thursday, with temperatures cooling to the 70s and 80s following the system. The weather pattern may remain active through the weekend with additional chances for showers and storms.
