Midwestern cities implement or consider utility rate increases

Municipalities in the Midwest are addressing rising operational costs through utility rate adjustments. In Columbia, Missouri, the City Council approved increases for electricity, water, and trash services. The electric rate will rise by 6%, expected to generate $8.6 million, while water rates will increase by 10%, projected to bring in $3.4 million. These hikes aim to cover energy procurement, infrastructure improvements, and maintenance.

In Ames, Iowa, the City Council is considering a 2.5% increase in electric rates. This proposal is driven by the need to address aging infrastructure at the municipal power plant, where existing boilers have exceeded their life expectancy. Officials are currently weighing the costs of repairing the current facility against the approximately $190 million estimate required to build a new thermal energy plant.
