Midwestern lakes and parks offer diverse outdoor recreation

The American Midwest offers diverse outdoor recreation opportunities through unique natural and man-made landmarks. In Wisconsin, Wazee Lake serves as a major destination for divers, campers, and fishers. Located in Jackson County, the lake is an artificial body of water formed by a former iron mine that operated between 1968 and 1982. It reaches depths of 355 feet and is noted for its clear water, which allows divers to see up to 40 feet through the lake. The surrounding 1,300-acre county park features a sandy beach, picnic areas, and playgrounds.

In Minnesota, the Spring Lake Park Reserve in Dakota County provides a nature retreat near the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Situated along the upper Mississippi River Valley, the reserve features trails such as Fahey, Fischer, and Schaar’s Bluff. A notable attraction is the 150-acre Bison Prairie, where a herd of bison can be observed as part of a local restoration project. The park is part of the Mississippi River Greenway, offering scenic views of the lake and river.
