Midwifery pilot project in Malmö faces regional decision
Representatives from Vårdförbundet are advocating for the continuation of ‘Min Barnmorska’, a pilot project in Malmö designed to improve maternity care through a continuous midwifery model. The project, which follows World Health Organization recommendations, assigns the same midwife to follow a woman through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
Preliminary results from the project indicate increased security for patients, higher job satisfaction among midwives, and a higher rate of vaginal births compared to lower rates of cesarean sections. The Skåne University Hospital board has reviewed the final report and recommended that the project's findings be utilized across the region.
The future of the initiative depends on a decision by the Region Skåne health and medical committee, scheduled for December 3. The project is currently slated to run until December 31, 2026, amid broader challenges in the sector such as midwife shortages and high workloads.
