MiG-29 fighter jet marks 49 years since its first flight

The MiG-29 fighter jet, a significant symbol of Soviet aviation during the Cold War, marked its first flight on October 6, 1977, at the Zhukovsky test airfield near Moscow. Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as part of the PFI (Advanced Frontline Fighter) program, the aircraft was designed to compete with American F-15 and F-16 fighters.

Developed under the leadership of Rostislav Belyakov, the MiG-29 was engineered for high agility, speed up to Mach 2.25, and a payload capacity exceeding 4,000 kilograms. The aircraft featured advanced aerodynamic designs, including leading-edge root extensions (LERX) and a dual vertical tail for enhanced stability. Its N019 Rubin radar allowed it to track ten targets simultaneously.

Since its inception, more than 1,600 units have been produced, with the aircraft serving in over 30 countries. Modernized versions of the jet continue to be utilized in contemporary conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.
