Migraine impacts millions in Chile and Spain
Migraine is causing significant social and economic disruption in Chile and Spain, where health organizations are calling for increased awareness and better diagnostic tools.
In Chile, an estimated 2.4 to 3 million people suffer from the condition. Authorities and specialists have convened a Dialogue Table to work toward a national patient registry to better understand the disease's impact. A study of Chilean patients indicated a 48% decline in total labor productivity, including a 44% reduction in productivity during work and 11% due to absenteeism. The condition shows a strong gender dimension, with prevalence being two to three times higher in women during adulthood.
In Spain, migraines affect more than six million people, representing approximately 12% of the population. According to the Spanish Society of Neurology, the condition affects 13% of adults and 9-10% of minors. It is identified as the primary cause of disability for individuals under 50. To combat underdiagnosis and lack of understanding, the Fundación Española de Cefaleas (Fecef) has launched the ‘La migraña a simple vista’ campaign to highlight the impact on mental health, work, and social life.
