Migrant boat capsizes off Djibouti killing at least 139

At least 139 people, including 15 children, died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti while traveling toward Yemen. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that the vessel, carrying approximately 305 people, sank during the night of October 8–9 near the fishing town of Obock.

Rescue teams recovered 139 bodies, while roughly 84 people remain missing. The 82 survivors identified so far are all Ethiopian nationals. The IOM is currently providing medical care, food, and psychosocial services to survivors at its migrant response centre in Obock.

This incident is described by the IOM as one of the deadliest recorded along the sea route from the Horn of Africa to the Arabian Peninsula. The agency is working with Djiboutian authorities on search-and-rescue efforts and burial arrangements, while calling for increased donor support to manage the humanitarian crisis.
