Migrant boat capsizes off Malta, 10 dead, dozens rescued

A migrant vessel that set out from Libya with around 60 people capsized about 45 nautical miles east‑northeast of Malta. Italian Coast Guard units recovered ten bodies and rescued roughly 48 survivors, while a fishing boat in the area helped bring the survivors to safety.

Malta’s authorities asked for assistance and are coordinating the ongoing search for any missing persons. The incident adds to the Central Mediterranean death toll, which the UN International Organization for Migration says has claimed at least 827 lives since early 2026, with more than 1,330 deaths recorded in 2025 alone.
