Emergency rescue ship Life Support saves 50 migrants off Libya
The Emergency rescue ship Life Support rescued 50 migrants from an overcrowded wooden boat in international waters within the Libyan Search and Rescue zone. The rescue operation, which concluded on Monday morning, revealed that seven people had died during the crossing.
The survivors, who reported departing from Zuwara, Libya, on August 16, include 45 men and five women. Notably, the group contains 29 unaccompanied minors. Many survivors are from Somalia and Egypt. Medical staff on board reported that nine individuals require medical assistance, with two in critical condition due to suffocation; these two were granted an urgent medical evacuation.
Emergency has criticized the Italian authorities' decision to assign the port of Bari as the disembarkation point, arguing that assigning distant ports forces vulnerable survivors to endure longer sea voyages, delaying their access to safety and medical services.
