Migrant transit remains active in Bosnia and Herzegovina's Una-Sana Canton
More than 500 migrants are currently located in the Una-Sana Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. While this number is significantly lower than during peak migration periods, the western route through the Krajina region remains active as migrants use the country as a transit point toward the European Union.
Žarko Laketa, Director of the Service for Foreigners Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated that migration trends through the country have decreased compared to previous years based on official statistics and analysis. Local residents have also noted that migrant groups are seen on the streets much less frequently than in the past.
The demographic composition of migrants has shifted. Between 2019 and 2021, the most represented nationalities were from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. Currently, the most numerous groups include citizens from Nepal, Syria, Morocco, and Turkey.
Security remains a concern regarding the border with Croatia, which is monitored by the Izačić Border Police Unit. According to the Una-Sana Canton Ministry of Internal Affairs, migrants have committed nine criminal offenses from the beginning of the year through the end of September, with one victim being a Bosnian citizen and the other eight being migrants themselves.
