Migrants deported by U.S. officials to Liberia report feeling stranded
U.S. immigration officials have begun deporting migrants to Liberia, a West African nation where many of the individuals have no citizenship or familial ties. The deportees include people from various Latin American countries, such as Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Venezuela, as well as individuals from Cameroon and Eritrea.
Those relocated to a hotel in a remote coastal area of Liberia describe feeling stateless and stranded. Some deportees, such as Honduran national Elvis Rodriguez Venturas, reported that their return to their home countries was previously barred by immigration judges due to fears of persecution. Many of the individuals have family members in the United States, including children who are U.S. citizens.
