Migrant caravan departs Tapachula for central Mexico

Approximately 700 to 800 migrants departed from Tapachula, Chiapas, on Thursday in a new caravan titled ‘Sueños sin Fronteras’ (Dreams Without Borders). The group is traveling toward Mexico City, with some participants intending to continue toward northern states like Nuevo León to seek employment.

The movement is driven by several factors, including extreme economic hardship, high costs of living, and significant delays in processing asylum and refugee applications through the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR). Some migrants reported waiting for over a year for administrative resolutions.

The contingent includes individuals from various nationalities, notably from Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Venezuela, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Colombia. The group also includes individuals who were previously deported from the United States. Participants have expressed a desire to pressure authorities for legal documentation and have requested security during their journey through central Mexico.
