Murcia coast sees multiple migrant boat arrivals near Cartagena
Multiple migrant arrivals have occurred along the coast of Cartagena in the Murcia region of Spain. On August 19, 2026, a black inflatable boat carrying 62 individuals—including 45 men, 15 boys, and two women—reached the tourist area of Cala del Barco. The passengers, believed to be Algerian, jumped into the water upon approach, startling beachgoers. All 62 individuals were subsequently located by the Guardia Civil, examined by the Red Cross, and handed over to police.
Regional leaders have expressed significant outrage over the incident. Murcia President Fernando López Miras criticized the central government, questioning how a vessel of that size could bypass maritime surveillance entirely. He described the arrivals as organized and noted they cause fear and insecurity among citizens.
Other recent arrivals in the area include a boat that landed at Punta Negra between Cala Reona and Calblanque, and another vessel that dropped off approximately ten people at Cala de Huncos. These incidents have intensified scrutiny of Spain’s maritime border security and the coordination between regional authorities and the central government in Madrid.
