Migrating birds face disorientation from artificial lights during fall migration
As fall migration begins, conservationists and wildlife agencies are urging the public to turn off or dim outdoor lights to protect nocturnal birds. Approximately 80% of migratory birds travel at night, navigating using the moon, stars, and Earth’s magnetic poles. Artificial light can disorient these animals, leading to fatal collisions with buildings.
Data from the BirdCast project, which utilizes weather surveillance radar, indicates massive migration surges. Recent forecasts predicted hundreds of millions of birds migrating overnight across the United States, with heavy activity concentrated over areas like Minnesota and the Mississippi River.
In addition to reducing light pollution, experts recommend other protective measures, such as keeping cats indoors, using window decals to prevent collisions, and providing fresh water via bird baths to help tired migrants. Organizations like the National Audubon Society note that building collisions account for significant bird mortality, including impacts on residential homes and smaller structures.
