Migration crisis: Emergency services respond to arrivals in Ceuta and Canary Islands

Migration-related emergency services are responding to significant arrivals in Spain's autonomous cities and islands. In Ceuta, the National Institute of Health Management (INGESA) provided medical assistance to 277 migrants within a 24-hour period. This included 158 primary care visits and 119 specialized emergency services at the Ceuta University Hospital. INGESA has maintained a Level 1 External Catastrophe Plan to manage the extraordinary demand using existing resources.

In the Canary Islands, Red Cross responders reported a tragic situation at the Arguineguín pier following the arrival of a migrant vessel (cayuco) that had been adrift for 26 days. While Salvamento Marítimo rescued 44 survivors and recovered five bodies, witnesses indicated that over 100 people may have originally embarked on the journey. Several survivors required emergency medical evacuations via helicopter and ambulance due to exhaustion and dehydration, with some remaining in intensive care units.
