Migration issues: Free dual nationality in Durango and U.S. deportation error

Authorities in Durango, Mexico, have launched a program to provide free dual nationality registration for individuals deported from the United States. The initiative, led by the Civil Registry, aims to assist those arriving without documentation or financial resources. In its first week, the program processed approximately 50 applications, helping migrants secure legal identity documents that typically cost around 3,500 pesos.

Separately, a case has highlighted flaws in border identity verification after Brian Morales, a U.S. citizen from Denver, was erroneously deported to Mexico. Despite asserting his nationality during a roadside stop in Texas on April 3, 2026, Morales was expelled because he lacked physical documentation. He remained in Mexico for nearly five months before legal actions and the presentation of his birth certificate allowed him to return to the United States.
