Chile and Panama respond to domestic crises

In Chile, President José Antonio Kast has ordered the Ministry of the Interior and the National Migration Service to initiate the expulsion of foreign nationals involved in violent disturbances during the October 18 commemorations. The National Migration Service (Sermig) is working to revoke the permanent residencies of five individuals—three Peruvians and two Haitians—following their detention during the unrest. A sixth individual, a Venezuelan national, may also face expulsion for entering through an unauthorized crossing. This move follows the Chamber of Deputies' approval of a bill designed to expedite administrative expulsions, which includes granting the Investigative Police (PDI) authority to seek judicial warrants for entering homes to execute expulsion orders.

In Panama, authorities have activated a green alert due to heavy rains following the October 9 earthquake. The National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) is monitoring vulnerable areas for potential floods and landslides in terrain weakened by seismic activity. The United States has increased its humanitarian assistance to Panama to a total of $6 million. This additional $1 million will fund Miyamoto International to deploy engineering experts to evaluate the structural integrity of critical infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, in affected regions like Tonosí.
