Migration Technicians Union rejects linking housing crisis to immigrants
The Migration Technicians Union (STM) has issued a formal repudiation of narratives that attempt to link the current housing crisis to immigration. In a statement, the union argued that such claims ignore structural factors identified by public entities, academics, and industry specialists.
The STM emphasized that blaming migrants is incorrect and serves to create social stigmas, which diverts public debate away from necessary structural solutions and weakens social cohesion. The union noted that workers within the migration system see daily evidence that contradicts these narratives.
Citing data from the Migration Observatory, the STM highlighted that in 2025, over 1.1 million foreign citizens contributed to Social Security, accounting for 14% of total contributions and resulting in a positive balance of approximately 3.3 billion euros. Furthermore, the union defended the rigor of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), stating that staff actively identify exploitation and verify accommodation declarations, countering claims that these processes lack oversight.
