Migration trends and humanitarian crises in Europe

Migration toward Europe remains a structural phenomenon driven by global economic inequalities and political transformations. In 2024, approximately 4.2 million people migrated to the European Union from non-EU countries, while 1.5 million moved between EU member states.

While the European Union faces demographic aging and labor shortages in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and care services, a contradiction exists between the need for migrant labor and the implementation of restrictive border policies. This creates a situation where migrant workers are often utilized as a flexible, low-cost workforce without full legal or social protections.

A recent humanitarian tragedy occurred in Ceuta, where a border crossing attempt involving approximately 70,000 people, including 2,100 minors, resulted in over 80 deaths, many due to drowning. The event has sparked debate regarding the vulnerability of unaccompanied minors and the ethical responsibilities of political institutions in managing migratory flows.
