Migration trends show rising asylum seekers in Guatemala and returns in Honduras

Guatemala has recorded 8,663 refugees and asylum seekers, according to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The figures, which include recognized refugees and applicants from El Salvador, Honduras, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, reflect data from the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) covering the period from 2021 to June 2026.

UNHCR noted that Guatemala’s geographic location makes it a central hub for regional migratory movements, creating challenges for local institutions. During the first half of 2026, the agency provided guidance to 1,268 people and evaluated the needs of approximately 300 individuals. Additionally, Guatemalan authorities issued 235 work permits to assist with the integration of these populations.

In Honduras, data from the Fundación 15 de Septiembre shows that 37,968 Hondurans have been returned to the country as of October 15, 2026. While this figure is below the 2025 total of 42,928, it has already surpassed the 34,386 returns recorded in 2024. The foundation emphasizes that addressing the root causes of emigration and improving local job opportunities are essential for the successful reintegration of returning citizens.
