Miguel de Cervantes: Anniversary of the author of Don Quixote
September 29 marks the birth anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the renowned Spanish writer widely regarded as the “father of the novel.” Born in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares, Cervantes achieved global fame through his masterpiece, “Don Quixote,” which is considered one of the most significant works in world literature.
Cervantes' life was marked by diverse experiences, including serving in the Spanish army and participating in the Battle of Lepanto, where he sustained a serious injury. He also spent approximately five years in captivity in Algeria after being captured by pirates. These experiences of freedom and captivity deeply influenced his literary themes. His most famous work, the first part of “Don Quixote,” was published in 1605, followed by a second part ten years later.
