Miguel de Unamuno and H. G. Wells meeting confirmed by unpublished letter

An unpublished letter has confirmed a 1936 meeting in London between Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno and British author H. G. Wells. The document was discovered in the archives of the Unamuno House-Museum at the University of Salamanca.

In the letter, sent to his children on 2 March 1936, Unamuno described having dinner with Wells before attending a screening of the film 'Things to Come' at the Leicester Square Theatre. The film was based on Wells's own work, 'The Shape of Things to Come'.

Previously, researchers only had indirect clues, such as a poem by Unamuno and a newspaper report. A handwritten invitation from Wells discovered in 2025 had suggested the meeting was possible, but this new letter provides direct testimony. At the time, Unamuno was in the United Kingdom to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford. The original document will be exhibited in Bilbao from 29 September to 30 October.
