Miguel Hidalgo mayor demands regulation of telecommunications cabling

Mauricio Tabe, the mayor of the Miguel Hidalgo borough in Mexico City, has called for urgent coordination between local and federal authorities to regulate telecommunications cabling. He cited significant safety risks and urban decay caused by unused wires, estimating that between 25% and 30% of the cabling in the area is no longer operational.

The demand follows an incident at the intersection of Horacio and Arquímedes, where a garbage truck became entangled in hanging lines and toppled an emblematic sculpture. Tabe emphasized that the streets should not serve as storage or waste sites for cable companies.

To address the issue, the borough is requesting an extraordinary budget from the Mexico City Secretariat of Administration and Finance to hire specialized civil protection personnel for risk assessments. Additionally, the local government has stated it will withhold new public space authorizations from companies that do not demonstrate active cleanup of obsolete cables.
